Social Science

The Faculty of Social Sciences started as a twin sister of Arts and Social Sciences in the 2001/2002 academic year. The pioneering Departments were Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, History, English, Languages and Linguistics. Prof. Ayo Adewole was also the pioneering Acting Dean of the combined Faculties. Similarly, the pioneering Coordinators of these Departments were, Theophilus Lagi Nze Chukwuemeka, Francis Akawu, K.B.C Ashipu, Ben Lanna and Abdullahi Modibbo for the Departments of Sociology, Psychology, Economics, English, Languages & Linguistics and Political

Science, respectively. The Faculty witnessed expansion with the addition of three departments namely; Arabic Studies, Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Religious Studies.

Subsequently, the Faculty got split into two, namely; Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences in the 2003/2004 academic year.

The Faculty at birth was endowed with experienced senior academic staff which include Prof. Zaynab Alkali as Dean of Arts, Dr. Femi Adelakun as Dean of Social Sciences, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Dr. Karimu Aliyu, Dr. Umelu Ojinmab, Dr. Olayemi Akinwumi, Dr. F.N. Fayam and Dr. Justin Aper. In the new Faculty of Social Sciences, Departments were headed by the following: Mr. Bulus Yusuf for Economics, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim for Political Science, Dr. Karimu Aliyu for Sociology, Mr. Harri Atama for Psychology.
