The department of biological sciences was established in the 2001/2002 academic session, but the initial take-off of academic activities was in 2002 with eleven (11) students as the first in-take all admitted into the department of biological and  later streamlined into Botany, Microbiology and zoology at the end of 200level. The department later operated three units Namely: Microbiology unit, Plant Science and Biotechnology unit and Zoology unit each headed by a coordinator. Zoology and microbiology units metamorphosed into full fledged departments in 2015/2016 session.

At the moment, the department runs undergraduate degree programme namely. B.Sc Plant science and biotechnology, student are admitted into the programme at the beginning of the 100 level through university tertiary matriculation examination (UTME), University pre-science (pre) programme, or by direct entry (DE) into 2000level. Enrolment of students into the programme stands at conservatively 60 students with a national outlook. The department also runs postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Biodiversity and conservation management, M.Sc and Ph.d (Plant genetics and Breeding).

The department has graduated students since 2005, and currently has collaboration on research and development with several institutions which include federal medical Centre, keffi, national sugar development agency (NABDA), Abuja, Abuja Environmental protection agency: National Agency for Genetic Resoures and Biotechnology (NAGRAB) Ibadan DN Innovative Biotechn Inc. USA

Departmental Board

The Departmental Board is made up of all lecturers in the Department except Graduate Assistant  with the Head of Department as the Chairman. The Departmental Board organizes and controls the teaching of all courses in the Department and the examination held in those courses.
