Special education department was established as a unit in the department of educational foundation in 2015/2016 academic session. Eleven students were admitted as first set into special education unit and were split into various subunit namely visual impairment, learning disabilities and hearing impairment degree programmes.
The first coordinator of special education unit was Mrs. Jummai Jerry now Dr. (Mrs.) Jummai Jerry until 2016/2017 session when Prof. Lere M.M became the unit head during his sabbatical leave to February 2018.

- B.Ed Special Education
In March 2018, Prof. Osourji P.I. took over the leadership of special education unit and head of department educational foundation until December 2020 after his 2 years sabbatical programme. In 2021/2022 academic year Dr. (Mrs.) Jummai Jerry became the head of department after obtaining full accreditation until date.
Special education department offers relevant courses to students with and without special needs so as to bridge the gap and encourage equal educational opportunities in higher institution and also prepare students acquire vast knowledge in handling people with special needs in different ways. The department prepares the students to uplift social and economic wellbeing of the nation.
The department offer fulltime Bachelor of Education, Special Education (B. Ed, Sp. Ed in visual impairment, learning Disabilities, and hearing impairment) for undergraduate and sandwich degree programmes. The undergraduate programme runs 4 years for UTME and 3 years for direct entry; full time programme including practical teaching for six weeks in year 3 and six weeks in year 4. Students offer practicum as clinical course done in the department exquisite laboratory which has special equipment for learning in all the subunit of special education (LD, HI, VI).
At present, the enrolment of students in the department runs at 258 for undergraduate students drawn across the country and has graduated so far 4 sets from 2018/2019 to2022/2023 academic session.

The general aim of education training should be in consonance with the realization of national needs and aspirations vis-à-vis personal and national development. The graduates of special education must therefore be resourceful, creative, knowledgeable and able to perform the following functions:
- Apply the skills in the use of new technologies and inclusive education
- Enhance commitment to the teaching profession and Special Needs Education
- Professional show mastery of problem solving skills
- Demonstrate the spirit of enquiry, creativity and entrepreneurship in teachers

Departmental Board
The Departmental Board is made up of all lecturers in the Department except Graduate Assistant with the Head of Department as the Chairman. The Departmental Board organizes and controls the teaching of all courses in the Department and the examination held in those courses.
