Physics as fundamental science is essential for all sciences and vital for modern technological development. The Department of Physics of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, is one of the pioneer departments at the inception of the university about thirteen years ago (January 2002). The department started with three lecturers and two office accommodation. Twelve students gained admission through Joint Admission and Matriculation Exams. Presently the students’ population has risen to about 500, the number of Academic Staff seven (7), Laboratory Technologists six (6), Laboratory Assistants two (2) and Administrative Staff two (2).

The aim of the Department is to offer programmes designed to impart sound knowledge in different branches of physics to her students. The department currently has a bias toward self-actualization in Physics Electronics, solid state Physics and other areas. It has sizeable laboratories where practicals run for all the levels. The department has standard equipments meant for practical work and the University has been doing its best to provide more.

Postgraduate programmes in the Department started in year 2010/2011 in both Theoretical and Applied Physics with Options in Plasma Physics, Electronics and Communication, Radiation and Medical Physics, Solid State Physics and Mathematical Physics. The programmes started with six lecturers and six office accommodation. Twenty one students gained admission into the various fields of specialization out of which three were for Ph.D, fourteen for M.Sc. and four for PGD. Presently the students’ total population has risen to about 80, and about 105 students have graduated, the number of Academic Staff is now fifteen (15), Technical Staff six (6), Laboratory Assistants two (2) and Administrative Staff two (2). Geophysics was established in 2012 making the total number of  postgraduate programmes in the Department to be six (6). The administrative structure of the programme is made up of all members of the departmental PG board with the Head of Department as the Chairman, and the Departmental PG Coordinator as Secretary. All PG teaching Staff are members of the board. The programmes are designed to impart sound knowledge in different branches of Physics. The Department has standard equipments meant for practical work and the University has been doing its best to provide more.

Departmental Board

The Departmental Board is made up of all lecturers in the Department except Graduate Assistant  with the Head of Department as the Chairman. The Departmental Board organizes and controls the teaching of all courses in the Department and the examination held in those courses.
