Historically, the Faculty of Arts was formerly part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, when the university was established in October, 2001. But quite early in 2002, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was split into two faculties from which the Faculty of Arts emerged as an autonomous Faculty with the following three departments at the take-off: English, History, and Languages and Linguistics. The Department of Religious Studies was later added to the faculty programmes. Another addition to the faculty much later then was the introduction of Mass Communication which was a semi-autonomous section in the Department of English.

The Faculty since its inception has continued to contribute to the growth and development of the university by servicing other faculties especially in the General Studies Unit and the Faculty of Education. The faculty is poised towards promoting scholarship, research and innovation as it has now become the heartbeat of scholarship in the university.

The Faculty itself and many departments in the Faculty have been organizing series of academic events and activities, ranging from conferences, seminars, workshops, lecture series, and symposium. In addition, the Faculty and all the departments have been producing editions of academic books, journals, proceedings, book of abstracts, monographs etc. Furthermore, staff members of the Faculty have been attending relevant academic conferences both nationally and internationally. All the departments in the Faculty run quality postgraduate programmes; PGD, MA, MPhil and PhD in the respective fields and research areas which are guided by the best international academic practices.

Academic staff members of the Faculty have been known to be interacting well with the students, through teaching, guidance, mentoring, directing, supervising and assisting them in all their academic activities and endeavors. Faculty staff members are known to be hardworking, enthusiastic and morally sound, likewise the students.

The Faculty of Arts today has grown to the extent that it houses nine (9) departments. It has a sizeable population of staff (118) and students (1,712) spread across the nine departments. Most of the programmes in the Faculty currently have full accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC) including the recently accredited programmes in French, History, Nigerian Languages, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Theatre and Cultural Studies.

The Faculty of Education was established primarily with the objective to train well-grounded professional graduate teachers for post primary institutions in Nasarawa state in particular and Nigeria in general. Below are the specific objectives of the Faculty of Education:

1. To impart in the students, the dignity of the teaching profession among an array of professions in the state and Nigeria in general
2. To enhance quality teacher education and produce adequate manpower of the schools in the state and Nigeria at large.
3. To provide educational courses and instruction facilities for pursuit of learning in all its branches and to make the facilities available to Nasarawa state indigenes and other interested Nigerians admitted to faculty programmes
4. To encourage and conduct education research in all fields of teaching and learning particularly in science education and educational foundations.
5. To undertake any other activity appropriate for faculty of education in a university of the highest standard.
6. To produce high level manpower for tertiary institutions through graduate degrees in education.
