In a proactive step to safeguard the health of the University community during the peak of the rainy season, the NSUK Centre for Malaria Research on Monday 11th May, 2026 facilitated the donation and distribution of essential anti-malaria items to students residing on campus and in neighboring communities.

The intervention, made possible by Apt Global NGO under the PMI Evolve Project of USAID Nigeria, aims to combat the high incidence of malaria and ensure that students remain healthy and productive in their academic pursuits.

Receiving the items on behalf of the University, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Yahaya Mohammed, emphasized that malaria is not just a health issue but an economic and academic one.

Professor Yahaya noted that malaria significantly drains the workforce’s productivity and leads to avoidable health deterioration. He described the donation as “timely,” specifically highlighting its necessity as the rainy season increases the breeding of mosquitoes.

The Dean officially handed over the items including 24 packs of Raid mosquito insecticides to the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) for immediate distribution to campus residents and neighboring secondary boarding schools.

Speaking earlier, the Director of the Centre for Malaria Research, Professor John Tongjura, explained that the gesture is part of a wider collaboration with USAID Nigeria to promote well-being within the institution. This sentiment was echoed by the Head of the Zoology Department, Associate Professor Hassan Ibrahim Chutar, who reiterated that “prevention is better than cure.” He noted that the distribution of these insecticides is a proactive defense against the spread of the disease.

The SRC Chairman, Amos Gideon, alongside his executive team, includiny Ejimanya Praise (Director of Business), Luka Barnabas (Director of Transport), and Clement David (Chairman, Security Committee) expressed profound gratitude for the benevolence. He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to ensuring that every pack reaches the intended students to maximize the impact of the project.

This humanitarian outreach reflects the University’s commitment to the holistic welfare of its students. By partnering with international NGOs like Apt Global and agencies like USAID, NSUK continues to demonstrate that it is a “Pacesetter” not only in research but also in community health and social responsibility.
