Welcome Address by the hod
Nasarawa State University, Keffi was established under the Nasarawa State Law Number 2 of 2001 as passed by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly. The University officially took off for effective academic activities in March, 2002 following the appointment of the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Baikie CON. The Department of English was originally part of the starting-up of the University, housed under the then Faculty of Arts and Social Science which later became separate faculties on their own.
According to the University Act (Section 4 and 5), the objectives for which the University is established are to:
Encourage and promote the advancement of learning and hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed or sex;
Provide courses of instruction and other facilities, and to make those facilities for the pursuant of learning in all its branches and to make those facilities available on proper terms to such person(s) as required to benefit from them;
Serve as both teaching and examining body, subject to the provisions of the University Law specifying the functions of the University (S.5).

Our Objectives
Regarding the philosophy and objectives of the Degrees in English and/or Literature (both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels)of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, the programme is designed to:
Give students a good grounding and effective mastery of the English language in its various applications to achieve adequate self-expression and self-actualization in the English Language;
Produce graduates who possess an informed-literary stimulus, thereby training them in critical and creative writing;
Equip such graduates with adequate knowledge of the full range of major landmarks in English and African Literatures in all genres and periods;
Adequately prepare the students for further research and other scholarly engagements in the English language, Linguistics, Literature and/or Language teaching in Nigerian schools and beyond;
Enable students overcome certain deficiencies in their spoken and written English without compromising standards;
Impart a humanistic perspective to such graduates by acquainting them with literature as an expression of man’s spiritual essence
