Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has taken another bold step in advancing its national research agenda with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sokoto State University (SSU) to drive collaborative research in Solid Minerals Research, and Medical Geology, Bioenergy, Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability.

The strategic partnership, formalized on Monday, July 6, 2026, at Sokoto State University, underscores the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, in positioning the University as a leading hub for research, innovation and impactful collaborations that address Nigeria’s pressing developmental needs.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor at the event was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Linkages), Associate Professor K’tso Nghargbu, who led a high-powered NSUK delegation to the 8th Combined Convocation Ceremony of Sokoto State University before participating in the MoU signing ceremony.

The agreement was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University, Professor Muhammed Bello Yerima, and Associate Professor Nghargbu on behalf of Professor Liman, marking the beginning of a far-reaching partnership designed to harness the research strengths of both institutions for national development.

The collaboration will focus on multidisciplinary research in solid minerals exploration, sustainable mining, bioenergy development, waste management and environmental protection. Central to the partnership is the proposed establishment of a Joint Research Centre that will investigate Nigeria’s mineral resources, particularly the gold-bearing corridor stretching from Sokoto to Nasarawa State.

The research initiative will also address critical public health and environmental challenges associated with mining activities, including heavy metal pollution, while promoting responsible resource exploitation and sustainable development in affected communities.

With its growing network of specialized research centres and innovation platforms, NSUK will play a pivotal role in driving the implementation of the partnership. The two universities will leverage the University’s expertise in research and innovation to develop evidence-based solutions capable of supporting government policies, attracting investment and improving the productivity and sustainability of Nigeria’s mining sector.

The institutions also agreed to pursue catalyst funding from the Federal Government and development partners to support collaborative research, technology transfer, capacity building and innovation-driven projects under the partnership.

The latest collaboration further demonstrates NSUK’s unwavering commitment to expanding strategic national and international partnerships, strengthening its research ecosystem and contributing practical solutions to socio-economic and environmental challenges.

Under the leadership of Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, NSUK continues to consolidate its reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost research-driven universities, championing innovation, academic excellence and transformative partnerships that create lasting impact for the nation and beyond.
