The Department of Geology and Mining was established in 2002 barely a year after the inception of the University with an initial student population of 16. In its current 18 years of existence, the Department has gradually grown with facilities that can host close to 400 students at a time. Additionally, its academic staff strength has grown from the initial 5 to about 17 comprising of fourteen academic staff covering nearly all fields of geology and interests, and three non-academic staff. Hydrogeology/Engineering Geology and Environmental Geology) and Postgraduate Diploma in Geology and Mining. The Department at inception was headed by Mr Nzegbuna (2002-2004). Subsequently Professor N. G. Obaje was head of Department between 2004 to 2009, Dr A. Moumouni (2009-2011), Mr N. G. Goki (2011-2013), Dr B. S. Jatau (2013-2014), Dr A. B. Oleka (2014-2018). The Department, currently headed by Dr N. G. Goki (an Associate Professor) since 2018 to date has steadily maintained a full accreditation level with its average undergraduate student enrolment of 50, and postgraduate enrolment of about 30 spanning through the PhD, MSc and Postgraduate Diploma programmes. It has also enjoyed a wide range of Industry cross-fertilization linkages with the Oil Industry, Mineral Exploration Companies, Federal Ministries and Agencies resulting in a turn-out of averagely Industry-Ready graduates over the years. The Department currently has academics who are fully registered with COMEG, NMGS, GSA, offer services as Resource persons and Consultants to a wide range of audience covering the public and private sectors. It also has memorandum of understandings with Institutions, Agencies and Laboratories internationally and within the country where staff and students link up with for their researches. The most recent of these collaborations include The Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute Warsaw, Poland; Mineral Economy and Energy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences Krakow, Poland. The NSUK Center for Medical Geology Research the first Chair to be endowed in the world is about to be inaugurated.
At the inception of the University in October 2001, the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences started with four academic departments, namely: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences and Physics. The Department of Geology and Mining alongside the Department of Geography came on-board in October 2002. The first set of students of the Department of Geology and Mining graduated in the 2005/2006 Academic session.
The Department started with 16 students out of which 13 of them entered the final year in 2005/2006. Prof. Anthony Nzegbuna was the first Head of Department who pioneered the students until Prof. Ali Moumouni joined him. Prof. Nuhu Obaje later joined the Department in January 2004 and took over as the Head of Department. Thereafter, Dr. M. S. Chaanda and Prof. Nathaniel G. Goki joined on full-time appointments in 2005.
The Department has since grown steadily and increased in both full-time, Sabbatical, and visiting staff. Dr. K’tso Nghargbu and Dr. Aisha A. Kana joined the Department as Graduate Assistants in 2006 and 2007 respectively while Dr. Tanko Yaú Ishak joined as full-time Assistant Lecturer in early 2007. Prof. S. E. Obrike joined the University as Lecturer II in 2008 while Dr. Adama Baba, Mr. B. I. Essien and Dr. Goodluck K. Anudu all joined the same year as Assistant Lecturers. In September 2008, Dr S. Iyakwari (now with Federal University, Lafia) and Dr. Augustine A. Umbugadu were employed as Graduate Assistants while Professor S. I. Abaa later joined the Department in 2010. In June 2012, Prof. B. S. Jatau, a Mining Engineer who has for some years been lecturing in the Department as a Visiting Lecturer was employed to join the Department as a Senior Lecturer.
The Department has also at various times been joined on Sabbatical status by Prof. U. A. Lar (2006), Engr. D. O. Attah (2007), Prof. A. E. Ikpokonte (2007), Professor H. Hamza, Professor M. Adikwu-Brown, Prof. A. E. O. Ogezi, Prof. J. Omada and Dr S. Onwuka. Prof. O. K. Ulu, Dr. P. D. Shekwolo, Dr. S. P. Braide, Prof. A. Momoh and Mr. M. Aduku as Visiting Lecturers. Mr J. E. Ologun was a contract staff between 2007 and 2009.
Within the last five years, Mrs H. O. Usman, Mr M. I. Ancho, M. A. Kana (now with ABU), Mrs. M. M. Iliya, Mr. M. U. Maaji, as full time Assistant Lecturers while Mr. J. J. Danwazan and Mr. A. I. Eya joined as Graduate Assistants. Dr. A. S. Olatunji a Lecturer I from the Department of Physics, also teaches the students (Geophysics) and supervises seminar students at undergraduate level. Departmental Board
The Departmental Board is made up of all lecturers in the Department except Graduate Assistant with the Head of Department as the Chairman. The Departmental Board organizes and controls the teaching of all courses in the Department and the examination held in those courses.
