The Department of French, faculty of arts, Nasarawa State University Keffi started as a unit under the department of Languages and Linguistics in the faculty of arts. It is necessary to state that it did not start in the same year the university took off. As a result, it has first sets of students in academic year 2002/2003. We have Prof. Fidelma Ukeje and Prof. Raymond as some of the past Head of Unit. It later became a s separate department and it has produced several students who are now working in various part of the world. As a full-fledged department, Prof. Dinatu Iwala, Prof. Rose-Juliet Anyanwu-Wenzel, Prof. Kester Ogemdi Echenim have all respectively served as head f the department. At present, Prof Tunde John Adeagbo is the head of department.
Asides first degree programmes, the department runs post graduate in French language and linguistics, literature in French at both master and doctoral levels.

The over-riding aim of the studying French in Nigeria is to facilitate communication with our French speaking neighbors’ and also to enhance our economic, social political and cultural aids with French speaking countries of the world. Specifically, the aims of the B.A French programme at NSUK are:
- To produce competent French graduates for the job market. This is achievable through language and translation courses.
- To expose such graduates to the sociocultural and political lives of French peoples of Africa and the world at large. This is achievable through culture, literature and civilization studies.
To initiate students for self-actualization through research and further studies

Departmental Board
The Departmental Board is made up of all lecturers in the Department except Graduate Assistant with the Head of Department as the Chairman. The Departmental Board organizes and controls the teaching of all courses in the Department and the examination held in those courses.
