The Department of Chemistry, Nasarawa State University, Keffi was established in the 2001/2002 academic session. The initial take-off of academic activities was in March 2002 with sixteen (16) foundation students as the first in-take, all admitted into the Department of Chemistry (broadly) and later streamlined into Industrial and Pure Chemistry at the end of the 2003/2004. The department later operated two units namely: Industrial Chemistry and Pure Chemistry.
At the moment, the Department runs undergraduate degree programmes namely: B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry and B.Sc. Chemistry. Students are admitted into the programme in the beginning of the 100L through University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME); University Pre-Science (PRE) programme or Direct Entry (DE) into 200L. The Department also runs postgraduate programmes (Ph.D, MSc. & PGD)
The Department has current staff strength of eighteen (18) academic staff, seven (7) technical staff and one (1) administrative staff/secretarial. The student enrolment presently stands at 350. The Department is currently headed by Professor P.C. Madu.

The Chemistry programme is designed to enable graduates acquired broad based knowledge on chemical processes in living and non-living organism which spread through the areas of organic, inorganic, physical and material elements. The first years of the programme is designed to prepare the students to acquire background knowledge of the relevant science subjects which will be a foundation to prepare for specialized knowledge in Chemistry. In the second and third years, the programme will expose the students to fundamental constituents in Chemistry to more robust areas of Chemistry during the final year.
The programme is planned to arouse entrepreneurial spirits needed for self employment and economic emancipation. The specific objectives of the Pure Chemistry programmes are to:
- Apply fundamental principles of Chemistry to life Sciences, environments, materials, emerging technological fields of chemistry as well as everyday situations.
- Stimulate the students to sustained interest and enthusiasm in chemistry and its application.
- Provide students with a broad and balance base of chemical knowledge and practical skills, developing students’ skills in applied chemical and non chemical areas that can provide confidence for employment.
- Inculcate in students an appreciation of chemistry in all human endeavours
- Work as part of a problem –solving team.
- Provide students with thorough grounding in principles and sound knowledge of scientific methods of the chemical sciences.
- Inculcate in students the appropriate skills and abilities to manage and administer technological operations within the field of Chemistry and allied areas.
- Prepare the students for professional participation in Chemical industries.
Relevance to National Needs
Employable high skills are required in teaching, researches and in the chemical and allied industries such as petroleum and management.

Departmental Board
The Departmental Board is made up of all lecturers in the Department except Graduate Assistant with the Head of Department as the Chairman. The Departmental Board organizes and controls the teaching of all courses in the Department and the examination held in those courses.
Entry Requirements
- Credit passes in WASC, GCE, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or IJMB O’level English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural, Chemistry and Physics ( in NOT more than two sittings)
- Other general requirements for admission into undergraduate programme in Nasarawa State University as provided for in the Admission Requirements guidelines not already mentioned may apply)
