The Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed has Inaugurated the Academic Board for the Global Health and Infectious Disease Control Institute (GHIDI).
The Academic Board under the chairmanship of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba is expected to play an oversight function in the management of the Institute.
Other Functions of the board are to consider all academic matters including curriculum, course materials, examination results, and recommendations to the senate of the University, and also consider other matters relevant to the mandate of GHIDI NSUK and advice NSUK management appropriately.
Other members of the board are the representative of the Commissioner of Health, Professors, Y.B Ngwai, Prof. M.D. Makut and Ishaya Kondyes Ismaila while Mrs Fatima Umar Izi is the Secretary of the Academic Board.
In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor has approved the appointment of Dr. Ishaku Akyala as the pioneer Director of the Global Health, and Infectious Disease Control Institute (GHIDI NSUK). Dr. Akyala who will also serve as a member on the GHIDIS Academic Board is currently a Research Resident Fellow with the Nigerian Field Epidemiology Training Program and a support staff to the World Health Organization (WHO), Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) among other International and professional bodies and organizations.
The GHIDIS has the mandate to influence public health policy by improving the standards of healthcare and to be at the center of control and eradication of Tropical and Infectious Diseases through research, training, innovation, practice and community service in tropical and infectious diseases.
GHIDIS will run the following Postgraduate programs, M.Sc Public Health, M.Sc Molecular Biology, and Genomics, and M.Sc Public Health and Sanitary Microbiology.
Other programs to be run in the centre are Mph. Epidemiology, Mph. Environmental, and Occupational Health, and Mph. Health Promotion and Education.
