In Nasarawa State University, Students welfare is the focal point of Prof. Suleiman Bala Mohammed Administration. He has empowered SUG through strengthening democratic unionism; and also through his whistleblowing policy.

However, the University through Students Affairs Division has Zero tolerance to cultism, Examination malpractice and all forms of social-vices.

Brief Profile


The Students Affairs Division is under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. The Head of the Division – the Dean Students’ Affairs is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.

The Students’ Affairs Division is very vital to the stability of the University

The history of Students Affairs Division of Nasarawa State University, Keffi could be traced to the establishment of the University in the year 2002.

The Division stated from a humble beginning with a single room office for the Dean of Students Affairs and later an office for the Students Affairs Officer all domiciled at the Administrative Block of the Main Campus.

The importance of this Division in the smooth administration of any academic institution, cannot be over emphasized; this is because, handling student’s welfare issues and other demands of students, squarely falls with the Students Affairs Division. This Division was later on moved to 1000 Capacity Auditorium at the Main Campus as their operational office.

Mission


To ensure provision of basic amenities for the wellbeing of students. To provide guidance for Educational, Physical and Emotional development of students.

Standing Committees


  • Divisional Management Committee. Composed of the following: Dean (Chairman), Deputy Dean, Assistant Deans, and Students Affairs Officer who served as Secretary.
  • Hostel Allocation Committee: This committee is saddled with the responsibility of allocating bed spaces to Students at the beginning of every academic session; This committee is composed of the following as members: Deputy Dean (Chairman); Students Affairs Officer; with the Hall Administrator as secretary.
  • Sports Committee: This committee is Chaired by the Dean; Students Affairs Officer; SUG Director of Sports; University Coach as Secretary and the Faculty representatives as Members.
  • Hostel Maintenance Committee: This Committee is chaired by the Dean, Reps of Director of Works, Reps of Bursar, and Reps of Auditor with the Students Affairs Officer as the Secretary.

Administrative Units


This Division is structured into five (5) Administrative Units for Administrative Purpose; Administrative Unit: This unit is headed by the Students Affairs Officer. The responsibility of the Students Affairs Officer is day to day administration of the Division and he is answerable to the Dean of the Division, who is appointed as the overall head of the division by the Vice-Chancellor. These units handles Students NYSC Mobilization as well as received Corp Members to the University, the unit also post corpers to various departments and units of the university.

  • Sports Units. This unit is headed by the Director of Sports called the University Coach. This unit is responsible for organizing sporting activities for the students for proper building of mind and physical wellbeing of both students and staff of the University.
  • Guidance and Counselling Unit:This is an important unit domiciled within the Students Affairs Division. This unit is headed by a specialist in Guidance and Counselling normally from faculty of Education. This unit is expected to guide students in their academics, social and psychological challenges for proper wellbeing of the students.
  • Hall Administration Unit: This unit is headed by a Senior Administrative Officer appointed by the Registrar. This unit is responsible for the day to day hostels administration, room allocation, and maintenance of sanitary conditions in the hostels. The Hall Administrator reports to the Students Affairs Officer, who in turn reports to the Dean.

ELIGIBILITY FOR HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION

  • In the University, we have four (4) campuses – viz, Main Campus in Keffi, Pyanku Campus, Lafia Campus and Gudi Campus. We have hostels in the Main and Pyanku Campuses.
  • In the Main Campus, we have, Female Main Hostel, Dilimi Hall, New Female Hostel; Male Main Hostel and New Male Hostel and Mande Male Hostel.
  • The University has concluded arrangement for more Hostels for both Boys and Girls in the Main Campus. Lafia Campus, Gudi and Pyanku Campuses. This arrangement is concluded through Public, Private Partnership (PPP).
  • Accommodation is provided for 100 level and final year students. Students that are Physically challenged are given automatic consideration without paying a dim. Allocation of bed space in the Hostel is done after payment of accommodation fee. This is done by the Hall Administrator.
  • The Hostels are managed by porters and portresses who ensure the neatness and security of the Hostels. The porters and portresses report to the Hall Administrator, who inturn reports to the Dean.
  • Hostel Maintenance Committee: In order to achieve our target of becoming a 21st Century University, this committee was set up to ensure proper maintenance of our Hostels for the comfort of our students. our aim to have a World Class University with a decent accommodation for her students.

Achievements


The Division has recorded a lot of achievements in the area of sports and other endeavors since inception. NSUK football team won many Laurets at National and regional Competitions. We have been participating in NUGA Games and other regional and Sub-regional Sporting events.

As stated above, laurels and medals have been won to the University by the sports unit which include:

  1. Participation in the first edition of the West Africa University Game (WAUG) in   Tennis, Table Tennis and Athletics championship held at the University of Lagos and won three (3) gold medals in 2006.
  2. Participating in the 3rd edition of the West Africa University Games (WAUG) in Hockey and Foodball Championship held at the Bayero University, Kano in 2010 and emerges champion in football, winning gold medal and a giant trophy.
  3. The University equally won gold medal in 10,000 metres at the West Africa University Games (WAUG) held at the University of Legon, Ghana in 2008.
  4. In 2012, silver and bronze medals were won during the 12th edition of the West Africa      University Games (WAUG) held at the University of Ilorin. It is equally important to note that, one of our players (female) was rated the most valuable player of the tournament in the female badminton category and was given an award.
  5. The University took part in 2018 West Africa University Games held at the University      of Port-Harcourt and came forth (4th) in football.
  6. Medals were also won at the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 2009. Silver and Bronze      medals in both single and doubles (Badminton).
  7. Also, the University Basketball and Football teams were invited to participate in the Nile University Games, held in Abuja in 2018 and won gold medal in football and a trophy and also came second (2nd) in Basketball winning silver medal.
  8. The third (3rd) edition of the Nile University Games, Abuja was in 2019 in which the         University participated fully in football and basketball. The football team won gold     medal and a trophy and silver medal in basketball.
  9. At the local level, the Vice-Chancellor Football Cup Competition which is tagged “Inter   Faculty Football Cup” comes up every year with each Faculty participating in the competition including School of Preliminary study. At the end of the competition, medals, trophies and cash prizes are given to the winners
  10. In the area of student’s welfare, we have achieved a lot particularly, under the Leadership of Prof. Suleiman Bala Muhammed. Our Students hostels has been renovated, New beds and mattresses and pillows where provided for the comfort of our students; Students Common-Room were well furnished with new Televisions and DSTV for their relaxation; Rights and Privileges of our students are adequately safeguarded; we have also address the Perennial water problem facing our campuses by sinking industrial boreholes in our hostels; Similar gesture were extended to off campus students.
  11. We have also achieved a significant milestone in eradicating all sharp practices that was associated with NYSC Mobilization in NSUK today, over 3,500 graduates were mobilized for National Service without any problem.
  12. The Division was able to ensure that SUG and all Clubs and Tribal associations elections are conducted freely, and fairly without any sentiment of any kind. We are able to conduct an SUG Election that was adjudged to be the fairest and acceptable to all parties without a single complain.
  13. Through Our Guidance and Counseling Unit, we have achieved a lot in addressing Students academic, social and psychological challenges successfully. It is gratify to state here, that since the inception of our University, we have no record of Students suicide at all
  14. Today, our Division is an active member of the National Association of Deans Student’s Affairs of all Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

Students Works Scheme


The introduction of students’ work scheme: This initiative was aimed at recruiting indigene students who cannot afford school fees and other cost of Tertiary Education. We have a Committee named STUDENTS WORKS SCHEME, chaired by the Dean. The Committee has the following as members:

  • To identify brilliant indigent students for Part-time employment with the University.
  • To sought for scholarship from government and public spirited individuals.

  • Sachet/bottle water production in NSUK Consult
  • Block Moulding within NSUK Consult
  • Fertilizer blending work at Faculty of Agriculture
  • Operating “KEKE” NAPEP – Campus transportation etc.

SPORTS UNIT

At the moment, the University has four (4) coaches and a groundsman who are in charge of coaching and training students. They are as follows

  1. SaguBulus Israel: He is the Deputy Director of Sports and the Head of Sport Unit.
  2. RaboBala Mohammed: He is the Senior Coach that takes care of Football.
  3. John KigbuAsoloko: He is also a Senior Sport Coach that takes care of Badminton.
  4. Agor Elijah Agor: He is a Football coach and by rank Sport Coach II who assists the Senior Sport Coach in coaching Football.
  5. Umar Rabo Mohammed: He is the University groundsman that helps in maintaining fields.
