Brief Profile

Nasarawa State University, Keffi was established under the Nasarawa State Law Number 2 of 2001 as passed by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly. The University officially took off for effective academic activities in March, 2002 following the appointment of the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Professor AdamuBaikieCON. The Department of English was originally part of the starting-up of the University, housed under the then Faculty of Arts and Social Science which later became separate faculties on their own.

According to the University Act (Section 4 and 5), the objectives for which the University is established are to:

  1. Encourage and promote the advancement of learning and hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed or sex;
  2. Provide courses of instruction and other facilities, and to make those facilities for the pursuant of learning in all its branches and to make those facilities available on proper terms to such person(s) as required to benefit from them;
  3. Serve as both teaching and examining body, subject to the provisions of the University Lawspecifying the functions of the University (S.5).

Currently, the Department is headed by Dr.Salisu Muhammad Rajand has21 academic members of staff (Tenure and Adjunct) while the student population is about 600. Since her inception, the Department has awarded a good number of both Bachelors(BA) and Postgraduate (PG) Degrees.
