The Department has a strong team of academic staff distinguished in their areas, with a strong research focus, contributing to knowledge development and innovation in Agriculture. It delivers high quality teaching and mentorship to all categories of her students from the undergraduate joint Degree Bachelor of Agriculture, offered in collaboration with sister Departments, to its Postgraduate Diploma, masters, and PhD. The Department prepares its students for careers in Agriculture with a global perspective, to compete anywhere in the globe. Brief Profile

The Department of Agronomy was founded in 2002, one year after the establishment of Nasarawa State University Keffi. It is located in Lafia, the Nasarawa State Capital, at the Shabu-Lafia campus, where the Faculty of Agriculture is located. The mandate of the Department is to train Agricultural Scientists in Crop science, Crop Protection and Soil science disciplines, for Bachelors, degree, Post graduate Diplomas, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees; to conduct cutting edge and innovative research in these fields and to carry out community service to the State, nation and the world. The Department currently has eleven Academic staff, with five in the professorial cadre, two Senior lecturers and four in the lecturer cadre. The Staff are seasoned academics with scholarly publications in reputable international and local journals and provide service or collaborate with  various International and local professional bodies and organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation – FAO, International Institute for Tropical Agriculture – IITA, International Crops research Institute for the semi-arid Tropics – ICRISAT. The Department has hosted various national conferences including Soil Science Society, Nigeria Society for Plant protection, Mycotoxicology Society of Nigeria, Horticultural Society of Nigeria and International commemorations of the world soil day of the FAO.
