Welcome to the Faculty of Environmental Science, Nasarawa State University, Keffi. I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all. The Faculty is young but well-established in the university that has won recognition since its inception. Brief Profile


The Faculty of Environmental Science, Nasarawa State University, Keffi was established on Thursday 30th March, 2017 by the Senate of the University with Professor Nasiru Medugu Idris as the pioneer Dean of the Faculty. The Faculty of Environmental Science is the 8th Faculty in the University. Currently, the Faculty has four departments namely: Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental Management and Architecture.

Vision, Philosophy & Mission


Environmental Sciences deal with the planning, design, construction, management and conservation of man-made and natural environments. The various disciplines that constitute environmental sciences are concerned with ordering the surface of the earth with a view to making it functionally appropriate, aesthetically pleasing, culturally relevant, environmentally healthy, and at the same time, optimally utilizing available resources economically without disrupting the balanced eco-system.

Aims & Objectives


Programmes in the Environmental Sciences will normally aim to:

  1. Create a deeper awareness of the global/earth systems and their interaction with human systems
  2. Create an understanding of the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of environmental issues
  3. An exposition of temporal and spatial scales of environmental challenges and the various approaches and options for remediation, adaptation and mitigation
  4. Provide robust programmes of training including current knowledge and practice relating to the different disciplines that enable students develop sound understanding of the principles and ideas underpinning such disciplines.

Brief Profile


The Department of Environmental Management was established by the Senate of Nasarawa State University Keffi on Thursday 26th October, 2017 as a programme as well as a Department for the proper take-off of the Faculty of Environmental Science. The Department got approval for the take-off of the programme on 16th August 2018 during the National Universities Commission (NUC) visit for Resource Verification and Assessment. Dr Adati Ayuba Kadafa was appointed on 1st November 2017 as the pioneer acting HOD of the Department.

Vision & Mission


Environmental management involves managing both the environment itself (i.e. water, trees, soil and animals) and the interaction between people and the environment (through production processes, consumption practices and policies). The ultimate goal of this management is to achieve a sustainable supply of ecosystem services over the long term that best meet our environmental, social and economic needs.To meet this environmental management goal, we require fundamental knowledge of environmental and human systems, as well as an in-depth understanding of the sensitivity and dependency of one on the other. In addition, we require an ability to analyze the environmental risks and impacts of human activities, as well as develop and implement strategies that meet our competing and often-conflicting objectives.Our Environmental Management program will help you understand environmental and human systems (and their interactions) through courses in ecology, hydrology, climatology, soil chemistry, biodiversity, sociology, economics, policy and others. It will also prepare you to understand environmental risks and impacts of human activities by equipping you with environmental management tools such as environmental indicator identification and measurement, environmental risk assessment, environmental impact assessment, lifecycle assessment, environmental planning and stakeholder engagement. These tools are supported with state-of-the-art environmental monitoring technologies, GIS/GPS technology, statistical analysis and others to ensure you have the expertise to excel in your career as an environmental professional in environmental management. Student will be taught to integrate classroom knowledge with critical thinking and structured problem solving to help students design management plans that meet social, environmental and economic objectives.  Students will learn both indoors and outdoors in our classrooms and laboratories. You will also undertake projects involving research, planning, and implementation for real-world clients

The planet earth is the only home that humans know. It is like an oasis in a stark and lonely universe. What Geography does is to try and make sense of the earth by providing knowledge of the earth’s physical, chemical, biological and human systems and of the interdependency of living things with the physical environments. This knowledge provides a basis for man to cooperate in the best interests of our planet and to find sustainable solutions to the myriads of environmental problems confronting us. The staff in the Department with varied areas of specialization are available to equip you with necessary information and knowledge so you can be part of the solution and not a problem to the society. Geography is gradually moving to centre-stage in the global society as mobile, real-time, interactive geographic technologies and systems are adopted as core operations management tools in most large-scale private and governmental organizations.The invention of real-time, interactive and mobile Global Positioning Systems (GPS)/Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies now enables ‘real world-real time’ geography. These technologies have led to significant advances in the ways in which geographic information is collected, mapped, interpreted and used by geographers as well as in the world at large. Such ‘geographic management systems’ are now at the heart of a vast array of real-time interactive mobile computing, oil and mineral explorations, geo-locational and geological surveys, mapping, and wireless geographic service applications.The job market is getting hot for geographers. More geographers than ever before are getting employed in exciting and lucrative jobs, using skills in cultural, regional, practical and physical geography as well as modern technologies that have revolutionized the workplace. Geographers use satellite images, GIS, GPS and remotely-sensed data both in the field and in their offices and laboratories. All levels of government and the private sectors need geographers today who can develop and apply geographic ideas and technologies to complex real world systems. At the University level, exciting new courses such as GIS, Environmental resource management, Environmental Science, and Climate science are attracting large number of students and the demand for staff with requisite specialties or theoretical and research capabilities is strong. It is my strong hope that our undergraduate students will take advantage of the vast opportunities that geography as a discipline provides so that they can be positive change-agents in Nasarawa State, Nigeria and the world at large.

Brief Profile


The Department of Geography, Nasarawa State University Keffi, was established in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences in 2002/2003 academic year, the second year of the establishment of the university with seventeen (17) B.Sc., Geography students. The Department admitted its second set of 23 students in the 2003/2004 academic year. The number increased to 34 students in 2004/2005. Since then, enrolment of students in the department has been on the increase. This is in addition to the large number of Education-geography students. The Department was towards the end of 2007/2008 academic session relocated to the Faculty of Social Sciences and in 2017, the Department finally moved to the Faculty of Environmental Science. The Department gave birth to the Faculty of Environmental Science which split into 3 Departments namely: Geography, Environmental Management and Urban and Regional Planning

The foundation lecturer/co-coordinator of the Department was late Dr. AkwaV. Labaris.

The department has grown in strength in both academic activities and linkages since its establishment. It now offers postgraduate programmes in various fields of Geography including Climatology, Geomorphology, GIS and Environmental Resource Management, beginning from the 2005/2006 academic session. The Department has a Journal called Nigerian Journal of Tropical Geography, which started since 2008.

Objectives


The specific objectives are to:

  • foster awareness and appreciation of the earth’s physical and human environments and their interrelationships;
  • enable the students acquire basic knowledge of geographic concepts, theories, problems and methods so that they can apply such knowledge in solving human problems; and
  • enable the students acquire necessary skills which will enable them pursue careers in areas like cartography, remote sensing, geographic information system, Surveying, environmental impact assessment. Such skills will equip geography graduates to fit into many areas in both the public and private sectors of the economy.
  • produce graduates equipped with critical  skills and abilities required for tackling problems of spatial planning and environmental management.
  • produce highly skilled manpower that can contribute to development at every level of society for the present and future needs of the country.
  • demonstrate the relevance of geographical education and skills in the planning and management of global resources and environment.
  • advance the frontier of knowledge in geography through teaching and research by employing the state-of-the-art technology in the process.

Vision & Mission


The broad nature of the geographical discipline compels it to span natural and social sciences, and adopting the approach of Systematic and applied studies. Thus, the undergraduate programme of the Department aimed and geared its Programme towards scientific geography and the application of scientific method, techniques and knowledge of geography towards tackling environmental, planning and development problems in Nigeria. It also aims at maximizing benefits and minimizing cost and damages to human behaviour in relation to the prevailing environment. These are to be achieved by attempting to conduct research, describe, explain, predict and where possible control human behaviour and/or the physical socio-cultural environment. The Programme is designed to help students understand the problem of their social and physical environment and also to develop a critical judgment which will enable them to be creative and self-reliant and make rational objective choices in contributing to issues relating to their communities.The purpose of B.Sc. Geography programme is the equipping of students with theoretical and practical knowledge to understand the interrelationships between the physical and human realms of the environment. Thus the broad aim is to have well-trained students who can understand, exploit and manage their environment in a sustainable way.

Objectives


The Department intends to achieve the following objectives;

  1. To be directly engaged in the creation, transmission of periodic evaluation of knowledge delivery in the pursuit of excellence in academic scholarship and intellectual inquiry through teaching, research and public service.
  2. To train student teachers that will be proud to be called teachers, that will also be good role models to those behind them.
  3. To equip them with the qualities of a good teacher
  4. To rise professional and well qualified guidance counsellors that will advise and counsel students on how to handle emerging child and adolescence problems.
  5. To train secondary school teachers that will handle students with diverse forms of disabilities (Deaf, blind, cripple, etc.) in order for them to live a fulfilled life in the society knowing fully well that there is disability in ability.
  6. To expose the students to the relationship between school and society where it exists, the inter-relationship between education and other social institution (family, religious, political, economical and health).
  7. To prepare the minds of student teachers on the impact of a child’s family socio-economic status in life.
  8. To explain how different forms of agents of socialization can make or mar a student’s life.
  9. To expose the students’ teachers to the skill of setting questions, marking and grading of students.
  10. To expose the students’ teachers on how the personality of an individual can affect his/her choices, interests, potentials and attainment in life.
  11. To explain the importance of the knowledge of emotional and social intelligence to a teacher in their dealings with those around them.
  12. To unveil to the students’ the factors responsible for designing the curriculum contents of the school.

The Programme is young and dynamic but most importantly, it will contribute immensely to urban and regional planning education in Nigeria today. Urban planning is a professional field concerned with addressing the health and welfare of communities. Planners are problem-solvers. They must be able to deal with both short- and long-range planning and projects large and small. Planners seek to enhance overall quality of life by addressing aspects of communities such as housing, land use, transportation, and responsible development that preserves the natural environment.Good urban planning creates communities that offer better choices for living. Planners help people make their communities more convenient, healthful, efficient, fair and attractive. Good planning improves the welfare of people and communities in the present and for the future.Urban and regional planners are responsible for ensuring that cities, towns and regions have vibrant economies and communities, provide for a high quality of life, and are environmentally sustainable. To achieve this, planners need a good understanding of the way in which societies, economies and environments operate and interact.

Therefore, the Urban and Regional Planning Programme will represent an integrating and interdisciplinary approach towards increasing social, economical and ecological complexity of cities and regions which requires proper planning to integrate sectoral themes as well as different levels of planning from urban quarters to regions. Dynamic conditions need to be considered such as demographic, socio-economic and technical changes. Here at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi! Brief Profile


The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) started as a programme as well as a Unit under the Department of Geography. The Senate of NSUK approved the running of the programme in September, 2014. In October, 2016, the National Universities Commission (NUC) came on resource assessment visit to the URP Programme of which, they gave an approval for the Programme to be a unit under Geography Department pending on the time that Faculty of Environmental Science would be fully established. The Senate of Nasarawa State University Keffi had approved the conversion of URP unit to a Department with effect from Thursday 26th October, 2017. The Department got full NUC accreditation in 2019.  The Department has a Journal called Journal of Environmental Planning and Sustainabilitywhich started in 2017 with two issues annually and the publication of the journal has continued with the biannual issues volume 1 and 2 every year and it is up to date.

In line with the mission of the university, the department is to prepare students to become planning professionals by providing a multi-disciplinary professional education that teaches students to define issues, solve problems and implement solutions to improve the quality of the natural and built environment, in ways that promote social justice and are rooted in an understanding of social change.

Philosophy


The programme of urban and regional planning that would be run in Nasarawa State University Keffi will consider planning as a means through which we can bring about a harmonious relationship between man, the built environment and nature. We see urban and regional planning as the art and science of ordering and managing land uses based on detailed understanding and analysis of societal needs, goals and objectives within the socio-economic, physical and environmental framework. It is concerned with the formation, designing, implementation and monitoring of land use plans and policies at the local, urban and regional levels. It is a broad-based discipline requiring comprehensive education and training in the planning, designing and management of the total environment both from the theoretical and practical perspectives.

  • Graduates with potentials and skills to create employment opportunities thereby become the employers of labour instead of job seekers; and
  • Individuals who can continue to advance and specialize through further studies.

Aim and Objectives


The aim of the proposed programme is to provide a condusive interactive platform for students, staff, community and their resources for achieving a harmonious living, working and recreating environment. The broad objectives of the course of study in urban and regional planning are:

  • To provide a broad based education and training which will assist in developing the student’s intellectual and professional capabilities to a high standard;
  • To produce a sound generalist professional planner who can operate effectively in the field of urban planning and related activities.
  • To utilise existing community planning problems as practical case-studies in prescribing professional explanations and solutions to identified and perceived human settlements problems.

Specific objectives:

  • To develop students’ understanding of urban and regional planning through exposure to theories, methods and techniques for planning, designing and managing land use and environmental dynamics.
  • To assist the students to acquire constructive understanding of the relation between the social, economic, technological and legislative framework of society within the physical and other integrative social and economic planning processes requiring a comprehensive education and training in the planning, design and management of the total environment both from theoretical and practical perspectives.
  • To provide students with varied practical experience of realistic planning problems,
  • To encourage the students to develop interest in particular planning skills and research methods, and
  • To undertake planning education amongst community members in order to balance the client-professionals relationship in the course of environmental planning

The Department of Architecture was established by the Senate of Nasarawa State University Keffi on Thursday 26th April, 2018 as a programme as well as a Department. Currently, the Faculty is facilitating and making all the necessary arrangement for the fully take-off but so far, the University Management has given some few applicants offer of temporary employment in various cadre but none of them has resumed

Vision & Mission


A two-tier degree structure has been in operation in Nigerian Universities for the last two decades. The first-tier leads to the award of a non-professional Bachelor’s degree in architecture, while the second-tier leads to the professional master’s degree. This statement provides a guide for the Bachelor’s degree programme. The Master’s degree is recognized as post-graduate programme. The minimum standards for the postgraduate Masters’ programmes in architecture are to be guided by the various institutions’ minimum academic standards for post-graduate studies as well as the threshold standards for professional assessment. Architecture is an interdisciplinary field that comprises several fields including human and physical sciences. A graduate of architecture is trained in the art and science of planning, design, erection, commissioning, maintenance, management and co-ordination of allied professional inputs in the sustainable development of the built environment. Architecture seeks to accommodate all human activities in all places and under varied conditions with a full understanding of the of the different physical There should be flexibility in the development of courses to allow for the changing needs of architectural education arising from changing social, economic, psychological and technological environment.

The overall national purposes in Architectural education can be stated in general terms as follows:

  • To produce competent, creative, skilled and versatile individuals capable of facing a broad spectrum of challenges associated with the design and construction of spaces for humans and activities;
  • To produce public spirited persons that are intellectually mature, socially responsible and environmentally sensitive.

Every institution should in addition aim at exploring the rich cultural and traditional architectural resources in the country in general and within its immediate environment in particular.

Aim & Objectives


The primary aim of architectural education is to produce competent, creative, intellectually mature, ethical, socially responsible professional designers/builders. Similarly, the B. Arch. and M. Arch Architecture programme is to provide the training needed for an understanding and postgraduate of the environmental design and to build upon this foundation by exploring in some depths, specific aspect such as construction management, capital waste, construction estimation, specification writing, and the rising impact of construction of the environment, economics and society.

Specific Objectives of the Programme:

An Architectural Education programme should be committed to:

  • Offering a high-quality of professional education aimed at establishing core principles and fundamental architectural knowledge, an awareness of, and aptitude to design, coordinate and carry out projects;
  • Equipping the student with advanced comprehension of the environmental, social, economic and technological contexts underlying design and construction in the built environment;
  • Inculcating in the students adequate knowledge, attitudes , specialised skills and character qualities that will upon their graduation enable them effectively integrate knowledge of allied professions, co-ordinate and control the design and construction processes;
  • Creating enabling environments that will foster active interest in research and development in architecture and related fields
  • Provide the student with entrepreneurial knowledge and skills to enable him/her to be self-reliant.
