Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba was appointed by the Vice Chancellor (Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed) as the DVC (Academics) and his nomination was approved by the Senate of Nasarawa State University, Keffi at its 94th Regular Senate Meeting, which held on Thursday 28th April, 2021.. He is the 7th DVC (Academics) of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi since establishment of the University in 2001.
Haruna Kuje Ayuba is a professor of Biogeography/Environmental Science and a Consultant. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) in Geography in 1989 from Bayero University, Kano and was posted to Borno State in the1989/1990 Batch for his National Youth Service Corps, where he became the first Corps member to have served in the Department of Geography, University of Maiduguri. Professor H K Ayuba’s excellent service during the NYSC year in the University of Maiduguri made the then Head of Department of Geography, Professor GGR Thambyahpillay, recommend him for employment. He was interviewed and was subsequently employed as Graduate Assistant in the Department of Geography, University of Maiduguri in January 1991 where his career in the University began. He bagged his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Geography respectively in 1992 and 1998 from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to a full Professor of Biogeography/Environmental Science in 2007 in the University of Maiduguri. He transferred his services to the Nasarawa State University, Keffi in 2014 and became the 9th Professor to deliver his Professorial Inaugural Lecture in the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
.Professor Ayuba has served in various capacities within the university system: These included two -term Head of Department, Geography (both in University of Maiduguri and Nasarawa State University); Deputy-Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Maiduguri; Faculty Examination Officer UNIMAID); Postgraduate Programme Coordinator in the Department of Geography (UNIMAID); Thematic Coordinator (Climatology), Centre for Arid Zone Studies; Deputy-Director, Research and Publications, NSUK; Member of University Senate since 2007; and Director, Academic Planning, Nasarawa State University, Keffi (2015-2021). .
Prof Ayuba has also engaged in many community services including Assistant National Secretary, Association of Nigerian Geographers; Chief Editor, NSUK Journal of Environmental Science; Associate Editor, Nigerian Geographical Journal (NGJ), a Journal of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG);, Nigerian Delegate to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP 20) Negotiations at Lima, Peru under the Federal Ministry of Environment, Department of Climate Change; and Nigerian Delegate to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP 21) Negotiations at Paris, France under the Federal Ministry of Environment, Department of Climate Change
Professor HK Ayuba is a recipient of several awards. These include Plateau State Scholarship, 1985-1989; BUK Award for the best Geography student, 1987; Study Fellowship Award by the University of Maiduguri 1991-1992; Fellowship Award by the Centre for Arid Zone Studies, University of Maiduguri 1994-1998; Grantee of the African Academy of Sciences, Capacity Building in Forestry research, Kenya 1997 -1998; and DAAD Alumni (3rd International Deans Course (IDC) on higher education management, Africa, held at Osnabrueck, Berlin (Germany), Ethiopia and Nigeria. He has travelled to the following countries for research and or conferences: Germany, Sweden, London, Poland, Japan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Niger, Cameroon, Chad, Egypt, Peru, Moscow, Paris and the Netherlands. He has consulted for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC); ESPA, United Kingdom; GIZ- GFG IN AFRICA-AFROSAI Project for the Joint environmental audit of Lake Chad; UN REDD+ Nigeria; NEWMAP; Oxfam; NEST, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Federal Ministry of Environment and many other organizations. He has over 80 publications in national and internationally recognized journals. He has over 25 years of expertise in arid land ecology, forest resource management, ecosystem-based adaptation, climate change adaptation and environmental Management.
Professor Ayuba is a member of the Association of Nigerian Geographers; Nigerian Environmental Study Action Team (NEST) and Member, Nigerian Environmental Society. Professor Ayuba is married to Dr (Mrs) Iya Haruna Ayuba and they are both blessed with two daughters-Tehillah and Roni. His hobbies include reading, teaching and playing musical instruments.
