The Entrepreneurship Development Centre has coordinating units: (i) Enterprise Development and Knowledge Transfer, (ii) Entrepreneurship Education, and (iii) Experiential Programmes. The Management is supported by a team of resource persons and administrative staff. The Management team is unwavering in fostering a cohesive community support network that creates entrepreneurial opportunities for everyone.

In Nasarawa State University, entrepreneurship education has become popular for several reasons. First, it integrates other disciplinary fields study with an enriching, integrative educational experience. Second, promotes the establishment of new businesses by graduates, enhances the employment prospects and success in the job market. Third, it promotes technology transfer from the university to the market. Finally, it forges links between the business and academic communities.

Philosophy and Rationale of the Programmes

Micro and small-scale enterprises in Nigeria produce a significant number of new jobs and can make a tremendous contribution to the economy. Students and trainees enrolled in the University’s entrepreneurship development programmes will develop an appreciation for the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, and for planning, marketing, and financing that are needed for a successful venture. The guiding principle of the entrepreneurship development programme is the development of creative

minds, innovative and entrepreneurial personalities who are prepared for leadership responsibilities in industry, government and non-profit organizations, create new jobs, add social and economic value and nurture a sustainable enterprise culture.


The aims of the Entrepreneurship Development programmes are to:

1. Acquire knowledge and develop skills necessary to plan and begin a venture;

2. Offer early knowledge of and contact with the world of entrepreneurship and some understanding of the role of entrepreneurs in economic, social, cultural, and personal value creation iii the community;

3. Promote the development of personal qualities that are relevant to entrepreneurship, such as creativity, the spirit of initiative, risk-taking

and responsibility;

4. Raise students’ awareness of self-employment as a career option with a view to enhancing their employability and creative career development;

5. Organize activities based on learning by doing-for example, students launching new ventures, developing new products, generating social and community initiatives, and running mini-companies or virtual firms;

6. Provide specific skills acquisition training on how to start a micro or small business in the vocational choice of students through the university incubated ventures and outsourced providers.

Wealth: To assist students in learning the concepts, skills, and attitudes necessary to make transitions to career and wealth creation.

Accountability: To Instill a sense of responsibility for and pride in o’ work.

The Entrepreneurship Development Programme

The Entrepreneurship Programme of the University is designed to assist undergraduate and graduate student-entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses, and to serve as a catalyst for the creation of sustainable and globally competitive enterprises in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, and beyond. This will be achieved by promoting entrepreneurship across the campuses and in the community through entrepreneurship education, enterprise development services, knowledge transfer experiential programme community engagement, business technology incubation, research and publications.

The Entrepreneurship programme of the University is made up of three (3) main components:

Entrepreneurship Development Centre

The Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) coordinates the entrepreneurship programmes of the University. The EDC is managed by a Director and an Advisory Board. Its focus includes:


The centre maintains a Journal of Entrepreneurship Research (JER) and annual series of international Entrepreneurship Research Conference (IERC). The first international conference was held in February 2012.


GST Entrepreneurship Programme:

This encompasses mandatory entrepreneurship education for all undergraduate and graduate students of the University through general studies (GST) Entrepreneurship courses. All the undergraduate students in the Faculties have commenced this programme in 2010/2011 with a pilot implementation at the graduate level in the Faculty of Administration (with Master in Business Administration (MBA) programme only).

The MBA students are required to spend a year being immersed in the entrepreneurial world. The students team up according to their specialized areas, to launch and manage their own ventures. The University currently runs an MBA (Entrepreneurship) programme among other specialization areas.

B.Sc. Entrepreneurship Programme

The University Senate approved the establishment of B.Sc. Entrepreneurship programme which is domiciled in the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Faculty of Administration with effect from 2011/2012 academic session. The programme admitted its first set of undergraduates in 2011/2012 academic session. You can see the information in hand book of the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies for details.

Entrepreneurship Capacity Building/Training Programmes

The following programmes have been designed to provide short-course capacity building/training and knowledge-sharing opportunities to graduate trainees, entrepreneurship educators, Entrepreneurship Support Organizations (ESOs), private sector and public sector trainees.

1. Training Seminars and workshops: Training sessions are designed to assist start-ups and established firms that are ready to take the next step. The EDC provides numerous workshops throughout the year. Clients would receive group training sessions on entrepreneurship that can advance their entrepreneurial skill and ability level and provide new information on new entrepreneurial opportunities and financing options. Training session topics can include entrepreneurial financing, leadership and strategy, management,

marketing, innovation and creativity, opportunities and venture creation, partnership and networking, social capital, pedagogy, training methodology, etc.

2. Certificate and Diploma in Entrepreneurship Programmes.

3. Entrepreneurship Clinic and Counseling.

4. Knowledge sharing forum: Business opportunity day, Business women’s forum, Business exhibition forum, Academia- Entrepreneurs’ colloquium.

5. Specialized Entrepreneurship Schemes: This includes: Student Entrepreneurship Training Scheme (SETS), Young Entrepreneurs Seminar (YES), Student Enterprise Programme (SEP), and Graduate Entrepreneurship Education (GEE).

6. Youth Entrepreneurship Society (YES) Network NSUK: This is a students’ entrepreneurship club. It maintains a ‘Facebook’ anchored students’ exchange network dedicated to inspiring entrepreneurial ideas and activities among students, alumni, educators and researchers.

1) At the 200 level, students are required to choose any one specialization vocation/trade/craft for skill acquisition. The students are to be engaged in opportunity identification and analysis, report on the entrepreneurial traits and characteristics and reasons for success or failure, signs of inventions or innovations as a group assignment project work.

2) At the 200 level, students are also to conduct feasibility studies and critique a drawn business plan based on vocational skills acquired or engage in an internship on campus or within the University community and report on logbook on their experiences from establishing/running an enterprise as project work.

3) At the 300 level, related case studies focused on starting and growing an enterprise shall be used to examine the students along with industrial tours and excursions.

Course 1: ESP 221: Entrepreneurship & Innovation

This course is an introductory course for studying Entrepreneurship for the first time. The design and flow of the course are aimed at creating awareness, providing the knowledge and skills that are important in achieving success in all human endeavours.

Course Objectives

(i) To provide hands-on, practical guidance to understand discover critical aspects of Entrepreneurship

(ii) To develop competencies, know-how, experience, attitudes, resources, and networks required to pursue different entrepreneurial opportunities.

(iii) To introduce students to the key requirements for starting an enterprise.

(iv) To expose students to many of the vital issues and immerse them in key learning experiences, such as the theories of Entrepreneurship, the Nigerian business environment, and the concept and management of innovation.

Course 2: ESP 311: Entrepreneurial Venture Creation and Growth

The aim of this course is to develop students’ competence and confidence in treating viable businesses with high potentials for new value addition and high income. The course is designed to enable students to achieve economic independence after graduation. Its main goal is to help change students’ mindset away from paid jobs and over-dependence on families and government. By the end of the course, students will be able to start and manage businesses at the micro or at the family level. They will also be able to grow ventures capable of generating employment and better utilize resources.

Course Objectives

• To enable students’ appreciate the importance of businesses in the society

• To make students recognize the need to grow existing businesses

• To enable students to appreciate the value the importance of family businesses

• To challenge students to continuously diversify the scope of businesses

• To expose students to management principles and best practices

Methods of Delivery

These courses will be taught using a lecture approach, mentoring and practical in business incubators/ existing businesses. Contemporary business growth models and best practices in business management will be used by the facilitators. A book of reading is to provide some insights and guidance to students. Assessment of the programme would be by written examination and continuous assessment.

Programme Delivery and Support Materials:

The course may be delivered in a variety of ways and venues involving classroom instruction, computer-assisted instruction, community activities

and work sites. The effort is being made to establish linkages with organizations that support entrepreneurs.

1. Entrepreneurship Educators employs case-method teaching, team- teaching approach, and alternative pedagogies.

2. Teaching takes the form of lectures, workshops, excursions and tutorials where students are expected to engage in active discussions.

3. The entrepreneurship educators mentor groups in the creation and development of their business ideas.

4. Private study is supported by extensive study notes and visits of organisations involved in aspects of entrepreneurship.

5. Students are expected to work independently as individuals and in groups.

6. Each group of 4 or 5 students produces and submits an outline plan (feasibility study), which summarises, in simple terms, the nature of their business idea within the context of the undergraduate degree programme.

7. Real-world exposure and experience, To provide this exposure, we bring entrepreneurial leaders to campus to share their stories with our community.
